smiling back , are they understanding?

when i teach in the classroom, the students they look real serious. i feel happy as i think that they are listening to me and learning. but this last week during the lecture it was real fun as i asked my students ,' what exactly they do in the class', do they wait for the lecture to get over and keep on smiling with me. And the answer in reality , they did not give the answer just all of them smiled back.

Their smile shows they like you. The only way to understand whether they understand is to ask them questions, and make it more interactive.
Give them problems based on the content taught and see how they respond.
